My Great-Great Grandfather was a blacksmith and a Baptist Preacher in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, when THE WAR began. Being a preacher, he tried to remain with his missionary duties, but by the summer of 1862, he could hold out no longer. The yankees were threatening his missionary routes, as well as his state and family. He enlisted in the 51st Alabama Cavalry, as the blacksmith for Company G. He rode with General Nathan Bedford Forrest, as well as General Joseph Wheeler. In September of 1864, he was captured and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, Federal Prison. He was finally paroled in June of 1865, and died four years later of stomach ulcers, no doubt due to his maltreatment in the yankee hellhole. GOD BLESS DIXIE!!!!!! DEO VINDICE!!!!!!

I am sitting here thanking god tonight that someone took the time to make such a well done website for our heritage these days certain people take the hate into it instead of the fact that it is our past you cant change the past but you can improve the future. My children enjoyed your site as well. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The sound is still here on Song of Dixie. There must be something wrong with your computer; people with Mac computers sometimes can't hear the sound.
Sorry you are having problems. You might try checking your windows media or whatever program opens your sound to see if there is something wrong with it.

DEAR SALLY: GREETINGS MY SOUTHERN FRIEND! I TRIED USING YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS, BUT MY MICRO OUTLOOK KEPT REJECTING IT FOR SOME REASON. I STILL AM NOT TOO GOOD AT THIS. JUST BRIEFLY. . . DID YOU HAPPEN TO SEE THE "HOUR OF GLORY" CUCKOO CLOCK THAT WAS ADVERTISED ONLY ONE TIME IN MOST SUNDAY PAPERS PARADE MAGAZINE ON 7-27-08? I JUST DUG IT OUT; BEEN WORKING SEVEN DAYS A WEEK; HAVE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS TUCKED AWAY SOMEWHERE. . . TIME LIMITED. ANYWAY. . . THE BRADFORD EXCHANGE, HAS ISSUED A LIMITED RUN CUCKOO CLOCK CALLED HOUR OF GLORY, HONORING GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE AND THE CONFEDERACY. "IT IS 17" TALL AND 14" WIDE. . AND BEAUTIFUL. I CAN MAIL YOU A PHOTO-COPY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, AND YOU CAN THEN WRITE TO BRADFORD TO RESERVE ONE, AT $149.95 + $15.95 S+H. I JUST ORDERED MINE AS I SPEAK. IT IS A BATTERY CLOCK, AND IN PLACE OF THE CUCKOO. . . A CANNON POPS OUT AND FIRES ON EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY. JUST LET ME KNOW IF YOU WERE AWARE OF THIS CLOCK, AND IF NOT. . . SEND ME YOUR MAILING ADDRESS SO I CAN MAIL YOU A FULL PAGE COPY FROM PARADE MAGAZINE. I HAVE ONLY SEEN THIS ONE TIME. . . AND THEY SAY DEMAND IS EXPECTED TO BE GREAT, SO I DON'T WANT YOU TO MISS OUT ON THIS, IF YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET MINE. TAKE CARE MY FRIEND. DAVID J. DYKY

Sally, I happened upon your website as I was looking for ideas for a website that I am working on; the Indiana Division Confederate Website for the Army of Tennessee. From the songs of Dixie to the songs of Faith, to your wonderful words about your mother, I can't express to you how much we have in common. You must be a wonderful person with a huge heart. My wife and I have been married for almost 30 years. We also have been so blessed to have parents who taught us about God and His plan of salvation. Our ancestors are from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. In the past year, we have been to a dozen battlefields across Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee and spend much of our non-working time reading about the sacrifice our ancestors made. Hopefully many others will find out about the true story of the war for southern independence. As you stated, it isn't taught in the schools. God Bless You.

I agree whole heartily with your comments - it bothers me when my children tell me they do not want me to give their children Little Black Sambo and other stories because the title might be offensive - that someone might see the book in their house in Jackson, MS and think they are racist. I feel that in one or two more generations the legacy of the South will be gone because of people not wanting to be politically incorrect. I say to that "Bull_ _ _ _" and will continue to talk the way I want and say the things as I see them. Good website.

Please continue to offer more background and cultural history. I would be pleased to see you add an area for stories of southerners and their experiences, now and past. I think it would begin to offer a deeper understanding of who we are, and what we represent. Thanks to a great effort on your part. I salute you.

My family served in the Confederacy from the beginning until the very end. There were four brothers and only two came home. One died at Sharpsville and the other died at Point Lookout. The oldest was only 25, I believe. I want to thank you for having sites like this to help remember these brave men an the glorious cause for which they sacrificed everything, even their lives.

This garbage was published 0n 3/22/08 in the Tampa Tribune http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/mar/22/na-jefferson-davis-quiet-200th/ ------ I sent this to rgoudreau at the trib. I don't know which of you wrote the trash editorial of 3/22/2008 titled Jefferson Davis' Quiet 200th. Your name and email was the first of the editorial staff that I found. That article is as gross an example of bigoted ignorance as I have ever read. The writer is an ignorant, insulting purveyor of the yellowest "journalism" I have seen. The writer and the Tribune should be thoroughly ashamed of the editorial.

I found your site while looking for the music to "Dixie". I am the County Manager of Dixie County, Florida and a 6th generation Floridian. As far as I can tell we are the only county to be named after the nickname for the South. I love your site and thank you so much for helping preserve the true southern heritage and our Christian beginnings. I grew up here and graduated from Dixie County High School and later the University of Florida. In high school we grew to love and cherish the song "Dixie" as ours. Now 40 years later thanks to political correctness and lack of understanding of our heritage by the school district the children of today including my three grown children have no idea what the song means. When it was playing once on the radio they had no idea what the song was or meant to so many of us. I truly love the people of all races and mean absolutely no disrespect to anyone but what about OUR Southern Christian heritage? It will soon be only a memory for most of us and will be gone when we are. May God Bless us all and especially you and your family for your efforts to preserve the true South.

I hear and see all kinds of ways people and government are stamping out the words Dixie and Confederate and such every where we turn. what can i do to ensure the preservation of our southern heritage, and her legacy? SSgt William Hutchison Jr.
William - Just hold strong and tight to what you know is true; stand tall and proud of who you are and our Southern heroes. Our people were the ones that fought for the constitution of this country. History has been distorted to the point some take this distortion as the truth; they don't want to do any research and learn for themselves, it is too easy and most convenient for their own purposes to buy into what is being sold. No need to argue with some people, just let them be. A good source of correct history for you to recommend to anyone that should ask you about what the truth is, is a book: "When in the Course of Human Events." by Charles Adams.
Also, thank you for your service to America. God Bless and Keep You!

Is it possible to copy off "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" onto a CD? I need it for a school project. Where could I get a copy of the song? I'd really like to be able to use this. Please write a note on your guest page. Thanks!!
Hi Jullia: Try some of the site below. You save it to your computer by doing a right click, then click "save target as". Remember to save in a place on your computer where you will remember where it is. Like your desk top or your "my documents" folder.
1 - At the top of this page you will see three different formats that you can save this song in: http://www.iath.virginia.edu/utc/minstrel/oldvirginnyfr.html
2 - Here is another site, but you will have to pay .99 cents for it: http://musicishere.com/artists/Bronn_Journey/Journey_Home/
3 - This is a nice one, but will also cost you .99 cents. Since you are in school, ask an adult to help you when using the computer to pay for something, and always make sure, if using any credit cards, that you are on a secure website; always look for the https on the website's address. Let me know if any of these were helpful.

You have a great website. I really enjoy it. The song "Carry Me Back To Old Virginny" has the correct lyrics, but please check the tune. It doesn't seem to be the right one. Thank you.
(Thanks Earl.... the page has been corrected)
